MLA in-text citation: author and location
With MLA selected, publication year is deliberately absent from the ordinary author–page form. Enter the family name and a page or other supported locator. If the author is already named in your sentence, the prose pattern shows where your wording goes and places the locator separately. The ellipsis in that pattern is an instruction to insert your own prose, not language to reproduce in the finished essay.
Using explicitly fictional sample data, a work by Chen quoted on page 18 would yield (Chen 18). If you wrote the author’s name in the sentence, you would normally retain only (18) after the relevant passage. For an unpaginated webpage, leave the locator blank. The dedicated MLA formatter explains title substitutions, multiple works, and other cases in which the Works Cited context affects the shortest clear citation.

IEEE in-text citation: a number with a stable meaning
With IEEE selected, enter the number assigned to the source in your reference list. A source introduced third is normally cited as [3], and later mentions reuse [3]. A page locator can identify a specific passage without assigning a new reference number. The quick tool formats the value you provide; it does not discover your source’s first appearance in a manuscript that it cannot see.
The full IEEE reference generator is the better choice when you need to build or reorder the bibliography itself. It keeps a saved source’s number synchronized with the displayed list. After changing the bibliography, review any numbers already pasted into the paper. Automatic renumbering in this browser interface does not automatically renumber a separate document in Word, Google Docs, or a publishing system.
IEEE example: [3] Specific page: [3, p. 18]
Missing information should stay transparent
A source can lack a named author, a date, or page numbers. Those are separate situations, and different styles handle them differently. APA can use n.d. for a missing date. MLA can identify an authorless work by a short title. IEEE still needs a numbered reference that identifies the underlying work. A blank field should trigger the relevant convention, not a guessed bibliographic detail.
Check the page, copyright information, and publication record before deciding that metadata is absent. A website owner is not automatically the author of every item it hosts. A current footer date is not proof that an old article was updated this year. A PDF viewer’s counter is not always the source’s printed pagination. These checks require attention to the source, even when the final citation is generated in a single click.
Keep the full bibliography in view
A quick in-text citation maker handles one small part of documentation. The complete record belongs in References or Works Cited, according to the style. Names, dates, title words, and reference numbers must point to that record consistently. A correctly punctuated citation can still be misleading when it points to another edition or a work you did not read. Compare the short form with your full list as the draft develops.
For APA, two works by the same author in the same year can require a and b suffixes. This quick tool cannot detect a conflict with another source entered elsewhere. Use the APA 7 bibliography generator to evaluate saved records together. MLA can require a shortened title to distinguish works; IEEE depends on first-appearance order. These are examples of context that cannot be reconstructed from a single isolated citation.
Copy, revise, and place the result carefully
The copy buttons transfer plain text for easy pasting into your editor. Plain text does not retain italics, so apply them to standalone titles where required. Keep the citation adjacent to the appropriate claim, and check punctuation after pasting. Short quotations, block quotations, and other special uses can have different placement rules. A clean result is a starting point for editing, not a substitute for reading the sentence in context.
If your assignment also needs MLA page setup, the first-page heading formatter creates a separate Word starter with a real running-header field. Source citations and page layout are different tasks. Working through them separately makes it easier to notice whether an error concerns attribution, publication details, or the document’s physical arrangement. Keep a final review for all three before you submit your work.
Use style authorities for unfamiliar situations
Consult APA’s citation guidance, the MLA Style Center, or the IEEE reference guide when you encounter an unusual source. This shared citation formatter covers ordinary patterns, but does not infer anonymous authorship, original publication history, or an instructor’s special rules. Describe what you actually consulted, and choose the clearest valid route for readers to follow.
