Sentence case, italics, and a useful example
In APA references, book titles and article titles generally use sentence case: capitalize the first word, the first word after a colon, and proper nouns. Journal names retain their official capitalization. The citation engine applies italics to the appropriate title or volume, but it cannot reliably decide whether an unfamiliar word is a proper noun. Review imported title capitalization before copying the output into a submitted assignment.
A verified book example on the official APA examples page is Robert M. Sapolsky’s Behave, published by Penguin Books in 2017. Its parenthetical citation is (Sapolsky, 2017), and its narrative form is Sapolsky (2017). The full reference identifies the author, date, complete book title, and publisher. Check the APA book reference examples to compare the typography and punctuation with your own book record.

Connect references to your sentences
A parenthetical citation usually places the author and year together near the claim: the discussion ends with a citation in parentheses. In a narrative citation, the author becomes part of your sentence and the date follows the name. With two authors, APA uses an ampersand inside parentheses and the word “and” in narrative prose. With three or more authors, the usual shortened in-text form uses the first family name and et al., subject to ambiguity rules.
For a direct quotation, add an accurate locator. Page ranges belong in the quotation-locator field when you are identifying the quoted passage, not in the publication’s reference page-range field. An online source without page numbers may offer numbered paragraphs or sections. The separate multi-style in-text citation tool is convenient for a quick citation, while a complete local reference list gives the APA engine more context for disambiguation.
DOIs, URLs, and lookup results
A DOI is a persistent identifier for a work. When one exists, APA normally presents it as an https://doi.org/ address. Check that it resolves to the work you intended. Prefer the DOI over an unstable browser-session link. A journal article obtained from a common academic database often does not need the database name or a login-specific URL. A public webpage, by contrast, needs a usable address that takes readers to the relevant content.
Crossref and Open Library are helpful starting points, but metadata can be incomplete. Title searches may return a review, a related chapter, or a different edition. ISBN records can contain names that need to be split differently into given and family fields. Compare the imported record with the source. The APA journal article examples show how missing publication elements differ from an incorrectly completed reference.
Turn saved sources into a readable reference list
An APA reference list is normally alphabetized by the first author’s family name, with further ordering rules for matching authors and dates. When the same author has different works from the same year, letter suffixes can distinguish the records. Keep both works in this APA 7 bibliography generator so that disambiguation is evaluated together. Adding a citation in isolation cannot reveal every conflict elsewhere in a manuscript.
Use hanging indents so that the first line begins at the margin and subsequent lines begin half an inch inward. The Word export preserves formatted references and hanging indentation; plain text is useful for moving data but cannot preserve font styling. Save an RIS export when you want to move source records to a reference manager. Browser storage is tied to this browser profile, so export a backup before clearing site data or moving devices.
A final check before you submit
Compare every in-text citation with an entry in your reference list, and remove uncited works unless your assignment specifically requests a broader bibliography. Check author spellings, dates, edition details, and DOI destinations. Distinguish a page you read from a work it merely mentions. If you did not consult the original work, follow the guidance for secondary citations rather than presenting it as a source you read firsthand.
Keep the required style consistent across the paper. The IEEE reference maker uses citation order and bracketed numbers, which should not be mixed into an APA author–date manuscript. For a humanities assignment, the MLA author–page formatter and MLA first-page heading tool address different tasks. Your instructor’s specific requirements remain the final check when they differ from a general-purpose workflow.
